Monoclonal Antibody Infusion Therapy

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapy, also called monoclonal antibody infusion treatment is used to fight mild to serious infections like the SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Our bodies naturally produce antibodies to help fight infections. SARS-CoV-2 however, is a novel (or new) virus that many of our bodies do not recognize, and therefore can not produce the antibodies needed to fight off the virus.

Monoclonal antibodies or mAbs, are produced in the laboratory and designed to recognize and fight off specific viruses such as SARS-CoV-2. By targeting exact components of the virus, the lab-produced antibodies interfere with the virus’s ability to attach and enter human cells, enabling the immune system to fight the virus more efficiently.

Monoclonal antibodies treatment is given to patients through an intravenous infusion (IV) and usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to administer, followed by an hour of observation and monitoring.

UPDATE: Based on new guidance from FDA.gov regarding COVID-19 Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, the recommended mAb (monoclonal antibody) treatment is Bebtelovimab.

Monoclonal Antibody infusion therapy is available today, through CourMed Concierge Healthcare & Wellness.

CourMed offers a number of mAb treatments which may vary by geographic location & availability.

Is Monoclonal Antibody Infusion Therapy Effective Against COVID-19?

Initial evidence supports the effectiveness of mAb or monoclonal antibody infusion treatment for COVID-19 by reducing the amount of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a person’s system. The reduction of virus (or viral load) leads to milder symptoms and decreases the probability of progression to more severe COVID-19 infection and potential hospitalization or death.
